The 2006 MMBA National Championship - International One Metre was held at Valletta Waterfront on Saturday & Sunday 2nd & 3rd December.
It was not possible to use the prefered sailing venue of Ta 'Xbiex due to unfavorable prevailing North Easterly winds. This change of venue did not deter from the enjoyment of two great days of sailing. Weather conditions were good with a predominently sunny clear sky.
Eleven skippers took part in the thirty races held over the two days, with three of the skippers being classed in the 'B' Fleet.
Well ordered racing took place throughout the two days with only a couple of mishaps occurring, thanks to the Principal Race Officer, Mr Peter Dimech, and the Chief Juror, Mr Peter Valentino who maintained tight control of the races. The most serious of these mishaps being a collision of two boats resulting in the loss of a keel on one of the boats. The skipper of the damaged boat, Dominic Briffa with boat number 02, had to then retire.
During the first day, Albert Micallef with boat number 11, certainly looked to be the favorite for first position, having acheived eight first placings out of the 15 races completed that day, however Sunday proved to be not so favorable for Albert who acheived only one first place on this second day. Vinnie Zammit with boat number 30 found conditions to be more in his favour on Sunday and came through to win the event with a creditable 8 firsts, 10 seconds and 5 thirds acheived throughout the two days.
Luca Ellul with boat number 03, and Nicolai Mifsud with boat number 33, both very new to the sport, maintained quite a battle throughout the event for first position in the B fleet, however Luca acheived two fifth and two sixth positions over the event which secured him the B Fleet First place.
Well done to both Luca and Nic for the good standard of racing that they acheived. We look forward to seeing them at all of the regular regattas and soon to be participating in the 'A' fleet.
Frederick Doublet with boat number 15 - our most senior skipper taking part - deserves a special mention, he did acheive the highest score of the event - which must be a record ! However Frederick's support at all of the club's activities is well regarded and it is always a pleasure to share his company and to reminiss over the past.
Sunday attracted a good spectator crowd to Valetta Waterfront, who took great interest in the boats and the races.
The Presentation Dinner, held on Sunday evening was well attended by entrants, family and friends. We all enjoyed an excellant meal at the Mermaid's Paradise, Ta 'Xbiex followed by the presentation of the awards and speeches by the Association President and Secretary.
Thanks to the tremendous efforts of David Micallef and Sandro Bajada we have some 500 photos of the event. A selection from both days of racing and the Presentation Dinner are included on the web however if anyone is interested I am happy to provide a CD containing a copy of all of the photos.
