The 2007 MMBA National Championship - International One Metre was held at Excelsior Grand Hotel Marina, Valletta on Saturday & Sunday 8th & 9th December. Eight club skippers took part in the thirty races held over the two days. We were very pleasedto be able to welcome a guest skipper -John Taylor and his wife Christine from Fleetwood Sailing Cub in the UK, which brought our complement to nine skippers.
On a blustery Saturday morning most skippers decided that the order of the day was No 2 rig. From the start of Day 1, our guest skipper John (boat no 47) was able to show the fleet what the standard of sailing in the UK is like - by winning 6 f the 9 races that day.
The Officer of the Day, David Farrugia and his assistant Lawrence Vento had set an excellant windward course, and well ordered racing took place throughout the two days. David maintained a professional and tight control on the racing, and Lawrence manned the rescue boat, having to come to the aid on many occasions when boats went out of control. Rosette Micallef provided stirling support thoughout both days on the line and score taking, dispite the cold and blustery conditions.
Both Vinnie (Boat no 30) and Matthew (Boat no 38) had electronic problems resulting in several missed races for them both. During the Saturday afternoon the wind blew up so the fleet set No 3 rig, even so the continued winds and strong squalls caused boats to be knocked down flat. Eventually the Officer of The Day called the decision to postpone racing for the day due to concern as to likely damage to boats occuring in the worsening conditions.
By the Sunday morning the wind had dropped enabling the remaining 21 races to be completed.
Electronic problems saw the demise of Vinnie (boat no 30) after race 19 and Mattew (boat no 3) afer race 21, leaving Albert (boat no11) to provide the most consistant sailing of the club skippers.
The overall regatta winner was our guest John with an excellant total of 18 firsts, 4 seconds and 3 thirds. Of the club boats Albert scored 7 firsts, 3 seconds and 7 thirds thereby taking the 2007 National Championship. Five of the highest race results were discarded from total of 30.
The Presentation Dinner, held on Sunday evening was well attended by entrants, family and friends. We all enjoyed an excellant meal at the Excelsior Grand Hotel followed by the presentation of the awards and speeches by the Association President and Secretary.
Thanks to Marvin Sultana ad Rosette Micallef we have photos of the racing on the Saturday and of the Presentation Dinner.
